January Update on Cool Water Bikes
Stay up to date on the successes of Cool Water Bikes
This winter marks eight years since we launched Cool Water Bikes in one little 10'x10' room in the Cup of Cool Water drop-in center and three years since we opened full time in our storefront. Thank you to everyone who has supported CWB over the years. 2015 has been an amazing year. Sales have increased 50% over 2014 (more than tripling the number of bikes sold). Youth drop-ins have doubled (when youth come in to use tools, buy small parts, or chat about whatever). Three young men have earned a bicycle, and one or two more will probably finish before the end of the year.
Because of the increase in business and youth activities, we need more volunteers than ever to help make this program succeed. We especially need volunteers with mechanical experience to fix up donated bikes to make them ready to sell. Someone willing to do that and work alongside youth who are homeless is even more desirable. If you do maintenance on your own bicycle, you know enough to help us with this. We would also love to hire a second staff member here at the shop, but we would need to increase our budget substantially to make that happen.
As of the end of November, we are $10,514 below what we need to cover expenses. If you, our donors, are able to match the donations we received last December, we would exceed that easily. Will you please consider contributing to the work of building relationships with youth going on at Cool Water Bikes? You can donate by mailing a check, going to coolwaterbikes.org, or stopping by the shop at 224 S Howard St. Thank you all and Merry Christmas!
