Continuing the Cup Story
Our founder gives insight into the direction of CCW in 2017 and beyond!
Many of you know the Cup of Cool Water story. If you don’t know the story give me a call, Mark Terrell at (509) 747-6686, and we can set a time to give you a tour of CCW and talk about it. However, today I want to share some changes at Cup of Cool Water and talk a little bit about the future.
Nothing has really changed in the type of services Cup of Cool Water provides. We still share the love and hope of Jesus through developing healthy relationships and providing services alongside youth who are homeless. However, there were three big changes for 2016. First we increased our day drop-in hours. We extended Monday day drop-in by an hour and add a day drop-in on Friday. Next, we changed our age range from 22 and under to 24 and under (kids now age out on their 25th birthday). This way we have more time during the week and more time throughout their life for us all to experience the love and hope of Christ.
Finally, I officially stepped down as the Executive Director. See the article by Mike Brown for an update on the search for a new Executive Director. However, there is much more we want to do. Let me tell you a true story that involves this vision of doing more.
It was a cold and rainy day in October. A young lady, Becky, came in. She looked tired, confused, and very distraught. Her partner abandoned her in the middle of the night. After getting checked in she walked over to a couch and fell asleep. She slept like it was the first peaceful sleep she’d had in days. Unfortunately, 4:00 came and it was time for Becky to wake up. Becky woke up crying uncontrollably and kept asking in tears of fear, “What am I supposed to do now? Where am I supposed to go?”
I gave a suggestion but the place was only going to be open for another hour.
She looked me in the eyes, screaming in tears, “Only an hour! Then what am I supposed to do? Where am I supposed to go when the night terrors wake me up? Where am I supposed to go where men won’t grab me, in the middle of the night, and try to throw me into their van?” As Becky walked down the stairs she kept crying, “Where am I supposed to go? What am I supposed to do?” She reached the bottom of the stairs and opened the door to walk outside. I could hear the rain beat on the pavement and her cries suddenly go silent as the door closed behind her.
Remember, earlier in the article when I said, “…there is more we want to do.” The above story illustrates the “more” Cup of Cool Water wants to do. Cup of Cool Water would like to have a 24 hour 7 days a week ministry where kids, like Becky, can go. We dream of having a place that has an emergency shelter for youth who are in crisis and need a place to go to feel the peace of Christ as they sleep. In addition Cup of Cool Water would like to have a transitional living facility where young adults can discover and put into practice their God given gifts. A place where they can develop and grow into the people God created them to be.
I know there are a lot of small and big steps before the above dream can come true. We will need more core staff, volunteers, food, paper plates, socks, stamps, people telling their friends about what God is doing at CCW, money, prayer, and so much more.
If you have not already, will you join us in making this dream come true?
